What is Conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, is an inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva—the thin, clear tissue that covers the white part of the eye and lines the inside of the eyelids. It can be caused by various factors such as viral or bacterial infections, allergic reactions to substances like pollen or pet dander, or exposure to irritants like smoke or chemicals.

Conjunctivitis is characterized by symptoms such as redness, itching, watery discharge, swelling of the eyelids, and sensitivity to light. Proper diagnosis and treatment from an eye care professional are important to effectively manage conjunctivitis and alleviate symptoms.

Types of Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis can be caused by infection from bacteria, viruses or other organisms, and also by allergy or inflammation.

N

Viral Conjunctivitis

It tends to cause a watery red eye and can last for two to three weeks even with the correct treatment. In most cases viral conjunctivitis does not affect your vision but rarely you might notice your vision becomes blurry or you may see glare when looking at lights. This is due to an inflammatory reaction causing small white dots on the cornea, the transparent window at the front of the eye. These usually fade with time, but it can take a few weeks or even months.
N

Bacterial conjunctivitis

It is more likely to cause a red eye with a sticky yellow discharge.

Conjunctivitis symptoms

The symptoms of conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, can vary depending on the cause of the condition. However, common symptoms associated with conjunctivitis include.
N

Redness and bloodshot appearance of the eyes

N

Itching or a gritty sensation in the eyes

N

Watery or mucous discharge from the eyes

N

Swelling of the eyelids/Sensitivity to light

N

Crusting or sticking of the eyelids together, especially after sleep

When to seek medical advice
If you experience symptoms such as redness, itching, excessive eye discharge, swelling of the eyelids, or sensitivity to light, it is advisable to seek medical advice. Additionally, if you suspect you have conjunctivitis or if your symptoms worsen or persist despite home remedies, it is important to consult an eye care professional. They can provide a proper diagnosis, determine the underlying cause of conjunctivitis, and recommend the most appropriate treatment.

Conjunctivitis Treatments

The treatment for conjunctivitis depends on the cause of the condition. Viral conjunctivitis often resolves on its own without specific treatment, but supportive care with cold compresses and artificial tears can help alleviate symptoms. Bacterial conjunctivitis may require antibiotic eye drops or ointments prescribed by a healthcare professional. Allergic conjunctivitis can be managed through the use of antihistamine eye drops or oral medications.
